Wedding Favors - Health, Wealth, Long Life, Fertility and Happiness

A wedding favor is a gift. It is a token of gratitude conveyed by the wedding couple to attending guests saying a heart-felt “thank you” through the gift.

The tradition has its roots in aristocracy where wedding favors were originally meant to signify wealth and power of the giver. The choice of gifts during those times were sugar cubes or similar confections. Sugar was expensive and by giving away gifts of sugar, there was a show of wealth. However, that does not mean that there is no symbolism attached to it. All gifts finally translate to appreciation and gratitude.

Even during modern times, wedding favors usually have confections based on sugar though they are not meant as a display of wealth. They are also different from earlier times in one aspect – personalization. Modern wedding couples believe in personalizing their gifts with thoughtful selection of favors and providing a personal touch to them with mostly their names and date of marriage printed on them. A quotation may also usually accompany it.

Further wedding gifts are not just tokens of appreciation. They solicit blessings from guests and importantly, convey good wishes of the wedding couple. This is usually observed through the established tradition of giving wedding gifts with 5 Jordan almonds that signify health, wealth, long life, fertility and happiness. Further, sugared almonds signify bitter-sweet relationships in marriage… that there will be ups and downs in any relationship and a balance needs to be struck.

Weddings gifts are not always symbolic. Some wedding gifts may be purely decorational. Still, it is a function that is meant to make guests remember the wedding couple and the special wedding they attended. They are intended to bring back nostalgic memories whenever guests look at the decorational items.

Whatever be the type of wedding favor presented, the bottom-line is that they are meant to convey a sincere “thank you” for attended the wedding.
